I have read analysis that utility scale storage such as flow batteries will be competitive with gas plants by 2020-22. What basis does the gentleman have for his statement, “But the cheapest batteries are currently six times the cost per kilowatt of natural gas generation, Mills said.”

Flow contracts are at $40/ megawatt (2017) and projected to hit $30.

Gasoline in auto engines is around 20% efficient. If wind is 40-45% efficient and batteries are 80-90% in conversion; then wind is a far better deal to power transport than petroleum for trucks and cars.

2017 US EIA data says gas generation costs $31.78/ megawatt.
