Japan Working to Make Hydrogen a Transportable Energy Commodity
In US, SoCalGas Proposing Hydrogen Pipelines
The Mitsubishi Corporation, working with other Japanese companies, plans to ship hydrogen around the globe in conventional tankers by incorporating the odorless and colorless gas in a more familiar "carrier" organic chemical, such as methylcyclohexane, which is a liquid at ambient temperatures and can be handled like gasoline. A top Mitsubishi manager explained the process Thursday during a webinar produced by the D.C.-based Center for Strategic & International Studies (CSIS). Partnering with other Japanese companies, Mitsubish has already tested this system to move hydrogen from Borneo to Japan.
